SKIATHOS TOWN
DISCOVER THE COSMOPOLITAN ISLAND
With some of the Aegean’s most stunning sandy white beaches, backed by rippling hills carpeted in scented pines and olive trees, Skiathos is the most sparkling gem of the Sporades.
Skiathos Island attracts thousands of visitors every year especially in summer! It is not only loved by youngsters, thanks to the crazy Skiathos nightlife, but it is also an ideal destination for families.
Skiathos town (“Chora” in Greek), the capital and port of the homonymous island, only 150 meters away from Thalassa Skiathos, is the biggest and most popular settlement of the island!
Feel Skiathos’ heartbeat, walking at Papadiamanti Street, named by the famous 19th-century Greek novelist and short-story writer Alexandros Papadiamantis, who is looked on as the father of modern Greek literature. Over the last years, the house of Papadiamantis has turned into a museum dedicated to the writer’s life and work. The area is surrounded by many café, bars, restaurants and boutiques and tourist shops.
Skiathos’ port is divided in two separated parts by pine covered Bourtzi peninsula, the ruins of the Venetian fortress built in 1207 until the late 17th century. Today, Bourtzi is a popular place for rest and recreation offering breathtaking views, the home to a maritime museum and a stylish bar-restaurant.
The island’s premier, dedicated in the late-18th century to the Annunciation of the Virgin by the monks, The Monastery of Panagia Evangelistria is located about 5 km north of Skiathos Town. Surrounded by fragrant pines, fir trees and cypresses, the monastery has a high wall that once kept pirates out. During the Greek Revolution, monastery used as a shelter to the fighters and refugees. Another important religious center in Skiathos is The Holy Monastery of Panagia Kounistra (or Ikonistra) , where the monks discovered an icon of the Virgin miraculously dangling from a pine tree (Kounistra meaning the swing movement).
BEACHES
ENDLESS AEGEAN BLUE
There are over 60 beaches in Skiathos, covered with forests of pine trees, soft sand and crystal water. Skiathos’ most famous beach is Koukounaries, which was rated 7th best in the world, 3rd in Mediterranean and best in Greece! Koukounaries, also known as “Chrisi Ammos” (Golden sand in Greek) is a protected nature reserve. Apart from the nature beauty, the beach is well-organized, it offers many water sports, beach chairs, umbrellas and beach bars.
Accessible only by sea, Lalaria beach is a secret paradise. Skiathos’ isolated northern coast is famed for its natural rock arch, but Lalaria is undoubtedly the highlight with huge white cliffs rising out of the clear deep blue sea and little blue-white egg-shaped pebbles above your feet.
You shouldn’t miss Megali Ammos beach. Situated a bit outside Skiathos Town, in front of Thalassa Collection is one of the most popular beaches of Skiathos Island, due to the crystal clear waters, the golden soft sand and the “delicious” taverns around.
There are so many great beaches around Skiathos that you will be wondering where to go first. West from Koukounaries over the headland, Big Banana, a sandy cove named by its shape, the young’s’ main choice due to the beach bars, and Little Banana mainly a nudist beach. Ahladies beach, a fully organized beach, very popular due to its closeness to Skiathos Town. Vromolimnos is a slim strip of soft golden sand washed by gentle aquamarine waves and overlooked by a few cafe-tavernas. Troullos beach, with the clear turquoise waters named after the little island found there which looks like a dome. Well organized and perfect spots for families situated on the south coast of Skiathos are also Agia Paraskevi beach, Kanapitsa beach, Vassilias beach, Agia Eleni beach, Aselinos beach.
